Zur wissenschaftlichen Professionalisierung des Faches kam es ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Als sicher bedeutendster Mathematiker der Universit\u00e4t Halle kann wohl Georg Cantor (1845-1918) mit seiner grundlegenden Forschung zur allgemeinen Mengenlehre genannt
