This is not just a matter of preserving books, but also of safeguarding our cultural heritage. Unfortunately, in previous years it was not always possible to store the ULB\u2019s historic collections under ideal conditions. These measures range from storing items in climate-controlled and light-protected storage facilities, through the use of suitable protective packaging, to bulk cleaning, pest monitoring, bulk deacidification, individual restoration and preservation digitisation.<\/p><p>The ULB regularly secures external funding for major collection preservation projects.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42b5969 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"42b5969\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45fb206 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"45fb206\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45fb766 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"45fb766\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInLeft&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4943464 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"4943464\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3823d1c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3823d1c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Bookbinding and Restoration Workshop<\/span>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49fd42b elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49fd42b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In our in-house <b>Bookbinding workshop<\/b> Historical collections and selected items published after 1850 are processed by a qualified bookbinder. The workshop carries out rebinding and repairs to books, restores damaged or loose stitching and adhesive bindings, and produces booklets. The preparation and post-processing of library materials for digitisation is also particularly important. Where necessary, boxes and other containers for library materials are also constructed, and so-called \u2018representative boards\u2019 are cut to size.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Adjacent to the bookbinding workshop is the <b>Restoration workshop <\/b>where two qualified conservators (holding either a Diplom or a Master\u2019s degree) are responsible for the preservation of the historical collections.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This involves not only the practical restoration of books, documents, prints and other library materials made of paper, leather and parchment, but also preventative conservation. This includes, for example, the monitoring and control of micro-organisms (mould) and pests (known as IPM = integrated pest management). In doing so, we must constantly monitor the condition of the valuable manuscripts, printed works and all other media holdings of the University and State Library and, where necessary, improve it through targeted measures. This ensures that the historical collections can continue to be made available to our users. The conservators also support research into our objects by answering enquiries about historical materials and production techniques.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The restorers\u2019 duties also include assessing the ULB\u2019s collections, drawing up action plans and cost estimates, and carrying out quality controls, so that parts of the collections can be sent out for restoration in addition to the work carried out in-house.
