Research traineeship

Every two years, the ULB trains academic librarians through a traineeship programme. The accompanying academic degree programme leading to a Master of Library and Information Sciences is undertaken in parallel at the Institute for Library Science in Berlin (IBI).

During the traineeship, trainee academic librarians receive 50% TVL E13. The university covers the costs of studying at the IBI.

Thanks to their academic training, academic librarians are able to build on the latest findings in their respective disciplines, integrate new knowledge and navigate infrastructural, technological and societal change within a complex environment. They operate at the interface between research and infrastructure. They provide advice on open access academic publishing, research data management, information retrieval and the management of projects and libraries.

As part of the traineeship, trainees rotate through all departments of the library, familiarise themselves with the library’s key areas of activity and assist specialist departments.

Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates usually start their careers at pay scale TVL E 13 or above. The prospects of finding a job quickly are exceptionally good, though they vary depending on one’s area of specialisation.

Work experience in our library – For school pupils, university students and apprentices

The University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt offers motivated school pupils, university students and external trainees on the ‘Media and Information Services Assistant’ course the opportunity to gain fascinating insights into the diverse work of our library through an internship. We are happy to provide support with career guidance and offer valuable practical experience in a professional library environment.

Please note the following points:

  • We require students and external trainees to undertake a compulsory work placement as part of their training or degree course (compulsory work placement).
  • School work experience placements are possible within the framework of school regulations.

As there are a limited number of internship places available, we would ask you to apply as early as possible. The internship is unpaid.
