An important challenge as a state library is the collection and preservation of literature written about or originating from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

The University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt (ULB) is the largest academic general library in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.It can call its own a stock of about 5 mill. units spread over the central library and the 12 branch libraries.
