Bibliography management
When carrying out academic work involving sources, it is important to keep track of everything. Reference management programmes can help with this.
When carrying out academic work involving sources, it is important to keep track of everything. Reference management programmes can help with this.
The software enables bibliographic details and full texts, where available, to be systematically collected and managed in a database. Such a programme allows reference records to be added from various sources, such as library catalogues, specialist databases and websites. By integrating the software with word processing programmes, it provides electronic support for creating citations and footnotes. Bibliographies can be generated automatically. A wide range of citation styles are available for this purpose, which can be customised as required.
For those interested, the ULB runs regular training sessions on Citavi, EndNote and Zotero. The training team is also happy to answer any questions about using Mendeley. Here, you will learn everything you need to know about the basic use of these programmes, as well as their specific features. The courses cover topics including:
- Downloading and installing the programme
- Options for importing data from library catalogues and databases
- Link between the database and text documents
- Format documents using various citation styles and create bibliographies
- Data export
- Task planning
- Organisation of knowledge, e.g. the structured filing of quotations, comments, etc.
When using the software, please ensure that you comply with the applicable copyright law and the licence terms relating to the data/content (full texts, etc.) in question. For example, it is, of course, not permitted to pass on (or share) full texts that, under the terms of the licence, are exclusively available to university members to (or with) individuals from other groups via the programmes. General information on this subject can be found, amongst other places, at here bundled.
To give you an initial overview, we have summarised some basic information about the individual programmes below.
