Newspapers, magazines and databases

The ULB Saxony-Anhalt provides access to a wide variety of academic journals, newspapers and specialist databases – in both print and digital formats. On this page, you will find information on the resources available, how to use them and the terms of access, as well as guidance on conducting targeted searches for specialist literature, up-to-date information and academic data.

(Daily) newspapers

The ULB offers a selection of printed newspapers, such as the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the taz and others, in the Reading Room for Historical Collections and Maps. The latest daily newspapers are available from 10.00 am and can be read on site.

 

Since July 2025, the ULB has also been offering a significantly expanded range of journals and (daily) newspapers on the university network. In addition to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Frankfurter Rundschau and the Süddeutsche Zeitung The database provides wiso Business Practice Access to over 200 further regional and national newspapers (including, amongst others,. Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit, Handelsblatt). In addition, the PressReader with a selection of over 7,000 national and international consumer magazines and newspapers.

 

Please note: For licensing reasons, access from outside the university network is restricted to members of Martin Luther University.

Journals & Databases
Database Information System (DBIS)

The DBIS lists freely accessible and licence-restricted databases, reference works and bibliographies. You can search the collections of the ULB and other academic libraries. Access options are indicated by traffic light symbols in different colours.

Journal Database (ZDB)

The ZDB lists the titles and holdings of serial publications (series, specialist journals, magazines and newspapers) in both printed and electronic form. You can search the holdings of the ULB and other academic libraries. Please note that it is not possible to search for individual articles in this database.

Electronic Journals Library (EZB)

The ECB is a free-to-access bibliographic database of academic electronic journals. Here, you can search the collections of the ULB and other academic libraries, organised by subject. Please note that it is not possible to search for individual articles in this database.

Access options for full-text articles are indicated by traffic-light symbols in different colours. Many publishers regulate access to subscription-based online journals by checking the IP address of the requesting computer.
Provided the licence terms permit, the ULB will apply for campus-wide access to the electronic journals in order to ensure that they can be accessed from all computers within the Martin Luther University’s IP domain.

The following generally applies to full-text services subject to a fee:

  • Access is restricted to members of Martin Luther University only.
  • The full texts of the articles may only be printed or saved for personal use and for research purposes.
  • The systematic downloading of articles or search results is prohibited.
  • Articles must not be passed on to third parties, either electronically or in printed form.

Access to licensed content

All registered users of the ULB Saxony-Anhalt can access the licensed resources via the university network.


Outside the university network, access is restricted to members of Martin Luther University only, for licensing reasons.


Institutional login procedure via Shibboleth

Another way for members of the MLU to access licensed media from off-campus is to use the institutional login via Shibboleth. This service is offered by a large number of publishers and is accessed via the providers’ websites, independently of the university network. 


To use this service, you will need your personal login details (username and password), which you also use for other ITZ services.
