Biology
The University and State Library holds an extensive collection of printed works, which reflects the historical development of the subject since the 19th century. The collection is currently geared towards the key areas of teaching and research. Most recent publications are made available in electronic form.

Library Collection & Acquisitions
The University and State Library holds an extensive collection of printed titles, which reflects the historical development of the subject since the 19th century. The collection is currently organised around the key areas of teaching and research (see below). Most recent publications are made available in electronic form.
Research
Printed works in the field of biology are mainly located in the Heide-Süd Branch Library (Ha 4). Older collections are stored in the stacks and available for use in the reading room. The ULB’s catalogues can be used to search for the collections and their locations.
Much of the current literature is available in electronic form (e-books, e-journals, databases) and can be accessed within the university network – via VPN accessible even from outside the university. Here, too, the ULB’s catalogues provide a starting point for research and access.
Consultancy and training services
Training sessions are held regularly on how to use the library, on literature and database research, and on reference management software. In addition, advisory services are available on open science and research data management.
Collection of subject-related links
You can find the electronically available journals in this subject area in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).
Various specialist databases are available for your research; you can find these in the ULB’s Database Information System (DBIS).
Specialist Information Service on Biodiversity Research

Please remember that when carrying out research from outside the university network, you must VPN- Activate the connection.
History and Profile of the Subject
Biology has a long tradition at MLU. Initially a sub-discipline of medicine, the first chair of Natural History and Zoology was established in 1769. Botany, whilst not yet a separate chair, is first mentioned in 1698 with the establishment of the Botanical Garden as the ‘Hortus medicus’. The Faculty of Agriculture, founded in the 19th century, also contributed to the development of the discipline. The teaching and experimental garden established in 1890 on the Brocken (Harz Mountains) is also very well known. This is now maintained by the Botanical Gardens of MLU and the University of Göttingen.
The Institute of Biology is currently represented by 15 professorships and covers the following areas: Genetics, Geobotany and the Botanical Garden, Microbiology (Department of Microbiology), Plant physiology, Zoology and the teaching of biology. Key areas of research and teaching are: organismic-ecological studies (plants and insects) → German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), as well as plant biochemistry, plant psychology, plant genetics and plant molecular biology → expertise in proteins and RNA.
The Department of Biology offers a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree programme, a teacher training programme and two international Master’s programmes (Biodiversity Science and Molecular and Cellular Bioscience). Related degree programmes include Biochemistry (Bachelor’s and Master’s), Bioinformatics (Master’s) and Pharmaceutical and Industrial Biotechnology (Master’s). There are overlaps with Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Mathematics and Computer Science.
