Library holdings and acquisitions

The University and State Library holds a print collection that has grown over time, covering the entire spectrum of Classical Philology through to Byzantine Studies and Medieval and Modern Latin, as well as literature on the reception of antiquity and the history of scholarship, along with interdisciplinary encyclopaedias, handbooks, bibliographies and journals in the field of classical studies. Gaps in the collection, which had arisen primarily during the GDR era due to a lack of foreign currency, were largely filled from 1990 onwards through public reconstruction funding, a large number of donations secured through fundraising, and funds allocated for new appointments. The current collection priorities are aligned with the university’s teaching profile, and efforts are being made to continuously expand access to electronic resources.

Degrees in Classical Philology are mainly awarded in the Classical Studies Branch Library compiled and made fully accessible electronically.

Library induction sessions, training courses on literature research and reference management, as well as advisory services on publication strategies and research data management, are held at regular intervals

Guided tours of the branch library are also available for school groups on request, possibly in combination with a visit to the Archaeological Museum.

History and Profile of the Subject

Classical Philology is one of the subjects with the longest tradition at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, even though until the 18th century it was regarded primarily as an auxiliary discipline of theology. This changed in 1783 with the appointment of the famous classical philologist Friedrich August Wolf (1759–1824) to Halle. He established Latin and Ancient Greek as independent university subjects and founded the Philological Seminar, the Department of (Classical) Philology, which saw itself as a training centre for both teachers and academic researchers – and continues to do so to this day.

In 1927, the Department of Classical Philology, together with its library collections, moved to join the other disciplines of classical studies at the Archaeological Museum, which had been renamed ‘Robertinum’ in 1922 in honour of the eminent classical archaeologist and philologist Carl Robert (1850–1922). Classical Philology primarily comprises the disciplines of Greek Studies and Latin Studies.
