Research

Printed works in the Department of Computer Science are mainly located in the Heide Süd Branch Library (Ha 4). Some older collections are stored in the stacks and available for use in the reading room. The ULB’s catalogues can be used to search for the collections and their locations.

Much of the current literature is available in electronic form (e-books, e-journals, databases) and can be accessed within the university network – via VPN accessible even from outside the university. Here, too, the ULB’s catalogues provide a starting point for research and access.

History and Profile of the Subject

The Department of Computer Science at MLU was founded in 1991. It was one of the first in Germany to offer an interdisciplinary programme in bioinformatics. The Chair of eHumanities was established in 2021 to forge links with the humanities.

The Department of Computer Science is currently represented by nine professorships and covers the following areas: cybersecurity, data analytics, bioinformatics, databases, information systems, data structures and efficient algorithms, computer science education, e-humanities, software engineering and programming languages, and technical computer science.

The Department of Computer Science offers degree programmes in Computer Science and Bioinformatics at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Furthermore, Computer Science is also offered as a teacher training programme for upper secondary schools and as a supplementary subject. There is academic overlap and collaboration with many subjects at MLU. Biology is particularly noteworthy.
