Manuscripts

The ULB has a considerable collection of manuscripts, including medieval manuscripts, numerous autograph books and rare musical manuscripts.

About the collection

The ULB’s manuscript collection has grown over time. In addition to items that were once acquired for teaching purposes or originate from teaching activities, the collection also includes property seized during the 19th-century secularisation, manuscripts from the library of Johann August von Ponickau, holdings from the Thuringian-Saxon Historical Society, and the Quedlinburg Abbey and Grammar School Library. After the Second World War, the collection was expanded through the acquisition of library holdings from private owners or church institutions.

Medieval manuscripts

The ULB holds around 320 medieval manuscripts. Around half of these have already been available digitally, including the manuscripts from the Quedlinburg Abbey Library and the German-language medieval manuscripts.

The collection includes outstanding pieces such as, for example, a Gospel book with Carolingian illumination from St Amand, the oldest extant version of the Sachsenspiegel’s or a late medieval folio.

Family registers

With around 300 volumes, the ULB Saxony-Anhalt boasts one of the largest collections of autograph books in Germany. „Alba Amicorum“ originated in university circles during the Reformation, when students asked their academic tutors to write dedicatory entries in their (text)books. From this tradition, a distinct book format developed, in which dedicatory entries from professors, fellow students, friends and relatives were compiled.

The ULB’s albums mostly have a regional focus. „Alba Amicorum“ originated during the Reformation in university circles, when students asked their academic tutors to write dedicatory entries in their (text)books.
