Library holdings and acquisitions
In line with the Institute of Romance Studies’ academic profile, the University and State Library’s collection includes both primary and secondary literature from the aforementioned fields and languages. The range of books, journals and databases in the collection reflects the Institute’s teaching and research. Numerous titles – including those covering foundational topics – are available in electronic form.
Find and Use
The Romance studies collection in the narrower sense can mainly be found in the Steintor Campus Branch Library. The majority of books can be borrowed on site. University members can access the digital resources – which are becoming increasingly important in this subject area and therefore account for a growing proportion of the library’s collection – via the university network and via VPN access. The titles are listed in the library’s Discovery system.
Consultancy and training services
In addition to traditional term-start training sessions, courses are offered on subject-specific databases, (systematic) research and Open Science topics. Specialised training sessions as part of courses and for individual departments or research groups are available on request. Consultation appointments on topics such as research, Open Science and research data management, as well as other research and subject-specific information enquiries, can be arranged via the contact details provided.
Collection of subject-related links
The romanistik.de platform brings together (up-to-date) information (including research news) relating to the subject.
The Specialised Information Service for Romance Studies is the central point of contact for general enquiries regarding the provision of specialist information. On the FID website, you will also find information on Open Science and research data.
Information on academic journals is stored in the Electronic Journals Database (EZB).
You can find out more about subject-specific databases in the Database Information System (DBIS), amongst other sources.
History and Profile of the Subject
The Department of Romance Studies at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg has a very long history, having in fact helped to establish the discipline itself. It is associated with figures such as Ludwig (Louis) Gottfried Blanc and Viktor Klemperer. You can find detailed information on the tradition of Romance Studies in Halle at here.
The institute’s current cornerstones are named after the languages French, Italian and Spanish: the focus is not only on language practice and linguistics, but also on the literature and culture, as well as the teaching methodology, of these three Romance languages.
