History and Profile of the Subject

As early as 1727, a professorship in economics, public administration and financial affairs was established for the first time at a German university in Halle, and research into economic topics began. Later, scholars from Halle brought the university renown in Germany and far beyond through their achievements in the field of economics. Notable figures include Ludwig Heinrich Jakob, a co-founder of public finance, and Gustav Schmoller, as well as Johannes Conrad, two leading members of the „Association for Social Policy“ (Verein für Socialpolitik), founded in Halle in 1872 – a scholarly association to which most university lecturers in economics, as well as numerous lecturers in business administration, in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland still belong today. Finally, Erich Gutenberg, who was awarded his doctorate in Halle in 1921, was one of the pioneers of business administration who began his academic career in Halle.

On 7 June 1951, an independent Faculty of Economics was established, later known as the „Department of Economics“. In 1991, under the leadership of the founding dean, Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Gerhard Schmitt-Rink, work began on restructuring the faculty. It was re-established on 5 November 1993.

The School of Economics and Business continues to build on its traditions today. It offers a modern, internationally oriented education in economics through six Bachelor’s degree programmes and seven Master’s degree programmes. Its academic profile is characterised by the close integration of business administration, economics and business informatics, with a focus on the areas of economic governance, financial governance, and business and IT governance. These are the three centres of excellence at the Faculty of Economics, where solutions for tomorrow’s economy are being devised today.
