Library Collection & Acquisitions

The University and State Library possesses a print collection that has grown over time, covering the entire spectrum of ancient history up to late antiquity, including the auxiliary historical sciences, whilst also containing comprehensive encyclopaedias, handbooks, bibliographies and journals on classical studies. Gaps in the collection, which had arisen primarily during the GDR era due to a lack of foreign currency, were largely filled from 1990 onwards through public development funds, a large number of donations secured through fundraising, and funds allocated for new appointments.

The current collection priorities are aligned with the university’s teaching profile, and the aim is to continuously expand access to digital content.

History and Profile of the Subject

Ancient History was established as a separate subject at the University of Halle relatively late, towards the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, it was part of the curriculum from the outset, as part of the classical studies and general history. Initially, Ancient History, together with its library collections, was part of the Department of History, before it was brought together with the other disciplines of classical studies in 1927 under the umbrella of the Archaeological Museum, which had been renamed ‘Robertinum’ in 1922 in honour of the eminent classical archaeologist and philologist Carl Robert (1850–1922).
