Library holdings and acquisitions

The University and State Library holds a historically accumulated print collection of research literature, as well as textbooks and schoolbooks, and a large collection of educational and psychological journals covering the various fields of educational studies. The current collection priorities are aligned with the teaching and research priorities of the individual departments and also relate to the didactics of primary school subjects.

In addition, efforts are being made to continuously expand access to electronic content. On the first floor of the library, there is a children’s and young adult literature section with seating and a reading counter. Here, students are provided with a wide and diverse range of children’s and young adult books, which offer inspiration for reading with school pupils and are designed to enable students, through their training, to critically reflect on the books’ content and engage with it academically.

The library also includes the „Eva Maria Kohl“ Archive of Children’s Literature“. It contains around 100,000 texts written by children and young people over the past 100 years.

Titles relating to the sub-fields of educational science are listed in the Franckeplatz Branch Library (Building 31) and are fully catalogued electronically. With a few exceptions, the collections at the Franckeplatz branch library are available for loan. Some of the literature, particularly in the fields of psychology and subject-specific didactics, can also be found in the Library at the Steintor Campus.

Internal classification system

The titles are listed according to an in-house classification system (which is currently being revised).

History and Profile of the Subject

The Department of Educational Sciences is situated on the grounds of the Francke Foundations in Building 31, thus continuing the tradition of its founder, August Herrmann Francke, both in terms of location and academic focus. In Halle, the department offers a wide-ranging and recognised research landscape, with a focus on childhood and youth research, the teaching profession, educational and social welfare institutions, pedagogical interaction, cultural studies in education, as well as prevention, rehabilitation and health.

The Educational Sciences research portfolio also includes a learning workshop with tools, books and equipment, which is accessible to all.

Educational science can be studied at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
