Caucasian Studies

Caucasian studies has not been, and is not currently, taught as a separate subject at MLU. Nevertheless, languages such as Georgian and Armenian are regularly taught at the Department of Christian Oriental Studies and Byzantine Studies. Consequently, since its foundation in 1918, the department has built up a substantial collection of teaching materials for learning Armenian and Georgian.

Library Collection & Acquisitions

The Key areas The focus is on linguistics and literary studies as well as religious studies, but since 1998 has also included the humanities and social sciences relating to the Middle East and North Africa.

In addition to printed material (much of which is in the languages of the MENA region), the ULB also provides access to a wide range of electronic resources in the Open Access.

In addition, publications on Caucasian studies and Armenian studies, as well as publications in the various languages of the Caucasus and Armenian are part of the collection of the Library of the German Oriental Society and, since 1998, have formed part of the acquisition profile of the Special Collection on the Near East, including North Africa (1998–2015) and the Specialist Information Service for Middle Eastern, North African and Islamic Studies (since 2016). Consequently, the ULB Saxony-Anhalt possesses one of the most comprehensive collections on Caucasian studies and Armenian studies in Germany. This collection comprises publications on Georgia and other North and South Caucasian peoples, as well as on Armenia in its various historical contexts.

Research

Titles relating to Caucasian studies and Armenian studies are predominantly held in the collection of the Near East / Ethnology Branch Library and must be ordered from there via Ha:lit. When searching for titles in non-Latin scripts, the rules applicable in the German library system Rules on transcriptions Please note: The collection of ordered media takes place at the counter of the Steintor Campus Branch Library. With a few exceptions, items held in the stacks may be borrowed to take home. The reading room at the Near East / Ethnology Branch Library features a section containing general reference works and dictionaries.
