Research

Printed books on philosophy are mainly to be found in the Steintor Campus Branch Library. The majority of the books are available for loan. There is some overlap in content, for example in the field of didactics, which results in Franckeplatz Branch Library, which accordingly contains a number of books relevant to the subject. There is also a relatively large number of relevant titles in the Branch Libraries: The European Enlightenment, Antiquity– and Law available.

Owing to the broad scope and long tradition of the subject, some printed works are held in one of the University and State Library’s stacks, for example because of their age and thus for reasons of heritage preservation. These resources can be requested via the catalogue systems (for use in the reading room, where applicable).

University members can access electronic media (e-books, e-journals, databases) – which are becoming increasingly important in this subject area and are consequently represented in the library to a growing extent – via the university network and thus also via VPN access. The titles are listed in the library’s Discovery system.

Training courses

In addition to traditional term-start training sessions, courses are offered on subject-specific databases, (systematic) research and Open Science topics. Specialised training sessions as part of courses and for individual departments or research groups are available on request. Consultation appointments on topics such as research, Open Science and research data management, as well as other research and subject-specific information enquiries, can be arranged via the contact details provided.

History and Profile of the Subject

The Department of Philosophy’s profile is defined by one chair each for theoretical and practical philosophy, as well as one chair for the history of philosophy. In Halle, philosophy can be studied at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, as well as on teacher-training programmes. The Immanuel Kant Forum (IKF) is at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Research into the European Enlightenment (IZEA) and is based at the Department of Philosophy.
