Research data

SADAR

SADAR stands for „Saxles-ANathinic DatenaArchive and R“epositorium” is a repository for the storage, archiving and, where appropriate, dissemination of various types of research data that meet the specific needs of our academic communities.

You can find the repository here.

Overview

Research data

By ‘research data’, we mean data that can lead to scientific findings or that originates from research projects. Examples include time series, transcripts of interview data, environmental measurements, databases, microscope images, and many more.

Generally speaking, it can be said that all data generated in the course of a research project constitutes research data.

Types of publication

With SADAR, we offer you two options for storing or disseminating your data, or information about your data. Regardless of accessibility, your data will be stored in our system for at least ten years.

  • Closed-access storage
    • The dataset is stored in the repository
    • The metadata for the dataset is freely available on SADAR (CC0 licence)
    • In SADAR, the dataset itself is only accessible to selected individuals or groups
      • We may amend the access conditions at any time at the request of the data providers.

      • A free SADAR account is required to access this service
    • The dataset’s metadata is sent to other repositories to improve its discoverability
  • Open Access archiving
    • The dataset is stored in the repository
    • The metadata for the dataset in SADAR is freely accessible (CC0 licence)
    • The dataset itself is freely available on SADAR (under a CC licence of your choice)
    • The dataset’s metadata is sent to other repositories to improve its discoverability

Basic requirements for a data set

To ensure that the datasets published are suitable for research, of high quality and can be reused, we expect the following requirements to be met:

  • The dataset was generated as part of the research
  • Ideally, the dataset should be linked to a scientific publication

  • The following points may also apply to Closed Access and embargoed submissions:
    • The dataset was generated as part of a project with an industry partner, or the dataset is being used for a patent
    • The dataset contains private or sensitive personal data which cannot simply be anonymised
    • An embargo on the dataset was imposed as part of the publication process

We reserve the right not to publish all research data.

Submission Process

1) Check the basic legal requirements

Depending on the context of the research data, it may contain elements that are not suitable for publication. This may be the case, for example, if the data was generated as part of a project involving industry partners who require confidentiality, or if personal rights are affected. Before research data is published, it is therefore important to clarify legal issues and to provide evidence of this during the submission process.

The university offers the following points of contact for clarifying legal matters:

2) Documentation

A detailed description of your data is very important. Without this information (metadata), it is difficult, if not impossible, to reuse, verify or reproduce your data. The minimum information required for research data includes:

  • Description of how the data was generated

    • Methodology

    • Hardware + Software (specific version)

  • Instructions for reproducing the data generation

3) Make an enquiry

Once the basic requirements have been met, you can complete our form for the publication of research data. We will then check whether the data meets our requirements and whether the information you have provided is sufficient.

4) Feedback and data transfer

You will usually receive a reply within a week as to whether we will publish your data. If so, we will discuss with you the format in which the data can be transferred. The method of transfer depends on the nature and scope of the research data.

5) Curation, cataloguing and uploading

As soon as we have received your data, we will include it in the K10plus catalogue and upload it to the repository. At this stage, your dataset will be assigned a DOI. As part of the curation process, changes to the dataset may still be required, in which case we will discuss these with you. This process is usually completed within a month. Once it is complete, we will send you a confirmation.
