Library Holdings and Acquisitions
The University and State Library has at its disposal a print collection that has grown over time, covering the full scope of ancient history up to late antiquity, including the auxiliary sciences of history, as well as general encyclopaedias, handbooks, bibliographies and journals on classical studies. Gaps in the holdings of older literature, arising from the period after 1945 due to a lack of foreign currency, were largely filled from 1990 onwards thanks to public funding, a large number of donations, and funding from professors’ budgets.
The current collection priorities are aligned with the prevailing profile of university teaching, and the aim is to continually expand access to digital content.
Finding and Using
Titles relating to ancient history are mainly located in the Classical Studies Branch Library (Ha 26) and are indexed entirely electronically.
The books in the branch library are shelved according to a specific classification system.
The Central Library of the ULB also holds mainly older collections in the field of Classical Studies. To search these collections (published between 1850 and 1900), our image catalogues are available as a supplementary research tool
Consultancy and Training Services
Library induction sessions, training courses on literature research and literature management systems, as well as consultations on publication strategies and research data management, are held at regular intervals.
The branch library also offers guided tours for school groups on request, including the option of combining the tour with a visit to the Archaeological Museum.
Collection of subject-related links
Journals on this specific subject that are available electronically are indexed in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).
To research literature on ancient history, you can use various subject databases, which can be found by searching the ULB’s Database Information System (DBIS).
Please remember to activate the VPN connection when carrying out research outside the university’s Wi-Fi coverage area.
History and Characterisation of the Subject
Ancient History was first established as an independent subject relatively late at the University of Halle, towards the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, it had a firm place in the curriculum from the very beginning, as part of classical studies and general history. Initially, the Department of Ancient History and its library collections were part of the Department of History, but in 1927 it moved, together with the other disciplines of classical studies, into the former Archaeological Museum, which had been renamed Robertinum in 1922, in honour of the eminent classical archaeologist and philologist Carl Robert (1850–1922).
The subject of Ancient History focuses primarily on Greek and Roman history from its origins to Late Antiquity and also encompasses the historical auxiliary sciences of epigraphy, numismatics and papyrology, which have traditionally been well represented in Halle.
