Special collections
In the reading room for historical holdings and maps, users may consult the historical collection (comprising works published before 1850), maps, special collections from the Historical Collections, and interlibrary loans under supervision. Workstations, PCs, a reader-printer and a multifunction device for printing, scanning and copying are available. In addition, a selection of current daily newspapers is available.
Use of the reading room for historical collections and maps
To access the collections, you must present a valid ULB library card.
Historical prints [published between 1501 and 1849] and maps are made available exclusively in the reading room for historical collections and maps. These collections can be searched for and requested via the Ha:Lit Discovery system and the OPAC. After a short processing time, the requested materials will be available for consultation in the reading room for historical collections and maps.
Manuscripts, incunabula, estates and other special materials from the Historical Collections will only be made available in the Reading Room for Historical Collections and Maps following a prior written request and confirmation of an appointment. Please submit written requests at least four working days before your intended visit to the reading room via the functional address historische-sammlungen@bibliothek.uni-halle.de Please submit your request. When placing your order, please state the title and reference number of the item you wish to view and let us know when you plan to visit (date, time). Up to five items can be reserved in advance. In some cases, a conservation assessment of the requested items may be required before they can be used. To be on the safe side, please therefore allow sufficient time when making your advance booking.
Subject to conservation and copyright considerations, reproductions may be commissioned. The costs of production shall be determined in accordance with Fee Schedule charged by the ULB. Users are not permitted to make copies on the photocopier for:
- Items published more than 100 years ago
- Special collections (from the Historical Collections)
- Interlibrary loans where the lending library or the interlibrary loans team has imposed a ban on photocopying
- large-format publications, such as newspapers, illustrated books, maps, etc.
- Loose-leaf editions
- damaged volumes, at the discretion of the staff (protection of the collection)

Using the map collection
A search for the contents of the map collection can be carried out in Ha:Lit and in the OPAC possible. In the search results, cards are marked with a card icon in Ha:Lit and a globe icon in the OPAC, and can be ordered via these systems.
The requested materials will be made available for consultation in the reading room for historical collections and maps (at August-Bebel-Straße 13) after a short processing time. Please observe the reading room’s terms of use during your visit.
Maps may only be borrowed for use off-site in the case of duplicate copies published after 1870, or in the case of copies of maps, provided that a scientific purpose can be demonstrated. Users are not permitted to make their own copies. However, reproductions may be commissioned, subject to conservation and copyright considerations. The costs for producing these will be charged in accordance with Fee Schedule collected by the ULB.
