Library Holdings and Acquisitions
Specialist literature on Japan was first collected in Halle by the German Orientalist Society (DMG; Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft). The ULB itself has been systematically acquiring specialist literature on modern-day Japan since the 1990s, following the establishment of the Seminar for Japanese Studies at MLU Halle-Wittenberg. The holdings of Japan-related literature, the expansion of which was thoroughly supported by Japanese partners, include both publications in the original language and books written in European languages. Thematically, the collection focuses predominantly on the history, politics and society of modern Japan (from the mid-19th century onwards). In addition, there are smaller areas of focus on aspects of prehistory and early history/archaeology, as well as Japan’s education system. Furthermore, in light of the growing importance of digital Japanese studies, the ULB aims to continuously expand access to electronic content.
In the ULB’s catalogues, the internationally recognised modified Hepburn system is used for the transcription of Japanese names and titles.

History and Characterisation of the Subject
Japanese Studies is offered as a postgraduate programme at MLU Halle-Wittenberg and is currently represented by one professorship. A doctoral programme also provides further structured doctoral training. The programme focuses on the history, society and politics of Japan in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, as well as on digital Japan studies. Both teaching and academic research are carried out in close cooperation with Japanese partners.
