Foyer Exhibition: The German Oriental Society

22. - 25.11.2024
Expired!
All Day

The first academic societies were founded in the 19th century with the aim of representing their respective specialisms across regions. In the foyer of August-Bebel-Str. 13, as well as in the reading room for historical holdings and maps, there is currently an exhibition on the German Oriental Society (DMG) and the history and holdings of its library.

The society was founded in 1845, making it the oldest Orientalist institution in Germany. Since the 1890s, the DMG’s library has been looked after by the University Library in Halle. The exhibition provides an overview of the various holdings, from coins, photos and artefacts to manuscripts, scholars’ estates and historical prints.

The exhibition can be visited free of charge during opening hours. A library card is required for access to the reading room.
