Academic traineeship

The ULB provides training for academic librarians in the form of a traineeship every two years. The accompanying university studies for gaining the title of “Master of Library and Information Sciences” is covered by the Institute for Library Science of the Humboldt-University in Berlin (IBI).

During the traineeship, the future academic librarians receive 50% of TVL E13. The costs for the studies at the IBI are covered by the university.

Due to their prior academic studies, academic librarians have the ability to tie in the latest findings in the respective studied subject areas into their work, to integrate newly acquired knowledge and to manage infrastructural, technological and social change in a complex environment. They act as the intermediary between research demands and infrastructure. Acamdemic librarians further advise on the scientific publishing process as Open Access, on research data management, on questions of information procurement and on the management of projects and libraries.

During the traineeship, the volunteers pass all departments of the library, get acquainted with the central fields of activity and supervise subject specialist departments.

After successful completion of the traineeship, they usually start their career including a wage of TVL E 13 or higher. The prospects of finding a job quickly prove to be extraordinarily good, but could also vary depending on the subject area.
