Karl Christian Eger

about the person

Karl Christian Eger studied theology and history in Giessen, Leipzig and Berlin as well as at the preacher’s seminary in Friedberg. After completing his studies, he became an assistant preacher and then a pastor in Darmstadt in 1892. After gaining his doctorate in theology at the University of Giessen, he became a professor at the preacher’s seminary in Friedberg in 1901 and its director in 1907. In 1913, he was appointed full professor of practical theology and university preacher at the University of Halle.

Karl Christian Eger worked in church authorities and synodal bodies, he was a member of the Saxon Provincial Synod, whose president he was from 1929-1933, as well as the Prussian General Synod from 1919. Here he belonged to the Volkskirchliche Evangelische Vereinigung, whose chairmanship he later took over. In addition to practical theology, he was particularly interested in Luther research.

The partial bequest was given to the ULB’s manuscript collection as a deposit by the granddaughter in 2011 and was given the shelfmark Yi 59.
