Library Holdings and Acquisitions

The library collection and its continuous development reflect the profile in research and teaching. Historical-critical editions of primary texts are as much a part of the works available in the library as is current research literature. Numerous titles – also concerning basic research – are available electronically. Large numbers of older sources and books have already been digitised and are freely available online to the general public.

Finding and Using

Printed books in the subject area of philosophy are mainly shelved in the Branch Library Steintor-Campus. The majority of the books are available for borrowing. There are overlaps in content, for example regarding the area of didactics, with the Branch Library Franckeplatz, where a number of other subject-relevant books can be found. In addition, a relatively large number of related titles are available in the Branch Libraries European Enlightenment, Classical Studies and Law.

Due to the wide range and long history of the subject, some printed works can be found in one of the stacks of the University and State Library, for example because of their age and therefore for conservational reasons. These resources can be ordered via the catalogues (if necessary only for usage in the corresponding reading room).

Access to electronic resources (ebooks, eJournals, Databases), which are now of central importance to the subject and are thus highly represented in the holdings of the library, is provided to university members via the university wifi and via VPN. The corresponding literature is fully indexed in the discovery system of the library.

Consultation and Training Services

In addition to the classic semester kick-off trainings, courses on subject databases, on (systematic) research and on Open Science topics are on offer. Specialised training courses within the framework of lectures or for individual work areas/groups are available per request. Consultation appointments on topics such as research, open science, research data management and other research and subject information issues can be arranged by reaching out to the contact given above.

History and Profiling of the Subject

With one professorship each for theoretical and practical philosophy and one professorship for the history of philosophy, the profile of the Department of Philosophy is outlined. In Halle, philosophy can be studied in the undergraduate and graduate programmes as well as in the scope of teaching programmes. Furthermore, the Immanuel Kant Forum (IKF) is located at the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of the European Enlightenment (IZEA) and the Department of Philosophy.
