Library Holdings and Acquisitions

In accordance with the profiling of the Institute of Romance Studies , the holdings of the University and State Library include both primary and secondary literature stemming from or relating to the mentioned fields of research and languages. The spectrum of collected books, journals and databases thereby reflects teaching and research profile of the institute. Numerous titles – also concerning basic research – are available electronically.

Finding and Using

Holdings relating to Romance Studies  in the narrower sense, are primarily shelved in the Branch Library Steintor-Campus . The majority of books are free for lend and can be borrowed on site. The electronic resources, which are of increasing importance to the subject and make up a gradually higher share of the holdings in the library, are acessible for university members either logged into the university wifi or via VPN. All titles are indexed in the library’s own discovery system.

Consultation and Training Services

In addition to the classic semester kick-off trainings, courses on subject databases, on (systematic) research and on Open Science topics are on offer. Specialised training courses within the framework of lectures or for individual work areas/groups are available per request. Consultation appointments on topics such as research, open science, research data management and other research and subject information issues can be arranged by reaching out to the contact given above.

History and Profiling of the Subject

Romance Studies as a subject can look back on a lengthy history at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, even up to co-founding the subject. The languages French, Italian and Spanish are currently constituting the main pillars of the institute: Thereby, the focus in this subject not only lies on language practice and linguistics, but also on the literature and culture as well as the specific didactics of these three Romance languages.
